Facts About Clearwater Beach, The Town and Its Beach

One of the best things about Tampa is the central west coast location that has protected it from hurricanes. In fact, the last hurricane to directly hit Tampa Bay was almost 100 years ago! With all of the hurricane watches and hurricanes hitting the southern part of Florida in recent years, it's sometimes easy to forget that. The Tampa Bay Hurricane of 1921, also called the Tarpon Springs Hurricane, was the last major hurricane to hit the Tampa Bay area when it made landfall in Tarpon Springs at a Category 3 and then weakened to a 1.

Clearwater Beach has a trolley called the Clearwater Jolley Trolley with two routes, a Clearwater Beach route that has stops around the beach area such as Ron Jon surf shop, the marina, and the recreation center, and a coastal route that runs from the Clearwater Transit Center or the Clearwater Beach Marina all the way to the Tarpon Springs sponge docks with stops along the way in Dunedin and other towns. There is also Clearwater Ferry, which is a water taxi that runs from the Clearwater Beach marina to downtown Clearwater, and based on demand, sometimes to Dunedin; however, this ferry primarily runs from Thursday to Sunday and has limited operations, usually requiring an online reservation.

Clearwater Beach has two bridges, the Clearwater Memorial Causeway which connects the beach area to downtown Clearwater and the Sand Key Bridge which connects the Sand Key beach area to Clearwater Beach. Clearwater is home to around 116,000 people with its beach area making up 8,000 of the population; its beach is famous for its white, silky, soft sand.
